Mathematics of ECPC RSM

mamjad 13 March 2008 21:31:33

Hi ECPC RSM Users,

I want to understand the solution of the partial differential equations used in ECPC RSM, as well as their derivation from the simple law of physics, to see how model works for us in background. If some one has stuff like that, it is requested to be shared.

Thanking in advance!

Cheers,
Amjad

Dear all,

I want to run the RSM with ERA40 data set. Can any one please tell that
from where i can find the ERA40 data which is interfaced with RSM.

Visulizing GSM data

mamjad 26 March 2009 11:45:10

Dear All,

Could anyone guide, how to make the GSM output in grads readable format. I want to comparing the RSM 500-hPa heights with the downscaled GSM.

cheers,
Amjad.

mkanamitsu
mkanamitsu 26 March 2009 18:10:11

If you compile RSM with BASEOUT on, it will produce global model field within the domain as separate pgb file.

1. Edit your define.h and chage '#undef BASEOUT' to '#define BASEOUT'
2. make clean
3. make
4. run the model.

If you want to see the global field from GSM data, run pgb script (in runscr directory) on global sigma file and generate pgb grib file.

NCEP Data as Initial Condition for RSM

mamjad 27 March 2009 10:05:00

Dear all,

For the validation purpose of RSM over Pakistan, I wana use NECP (reanalysis 1) obtained from http://dss.ucar.edu/pub/reanalysis/ (for the period MJJAS 2008)

Can anyone guide how I can move further?

I am not sure weather the same SSTs and ICE files (as used GSM) will work or not.

Regards,
Amjad.

kei
kei 27 March 2009 15:34:45

If you have SST and sea ice files in GRIB format, the RSM can handle them. You'll generally need global spectral coefficient files (a.k.a., 'sig files'), global SST and sea ice files, and appropriate initial condition (sig and sfc files) to run RSM.

Error in rsim

mamjad 19 May 2009 05:39:13

Dear All,

I have obtained the GSM data from ecpc for April-Sep, 2009. When i run rsim in rruns folder it gives the following error.

/scenarios-2/AMJAD/New_Run/ecpc_exp/rruns/runscr/fetchfile /scenarios-2/AMJAD/sst/l01/sig.ft2009040100 ./initial_sig_gl ln /scenarios-2/AMJAD/sst/l01/sig.ft2009040100 does not exit
+exit 8

Can anyone answer how to remove it. I've seen through /libs/etc date script that it has the initial conditions from 2009040100.

Regards,

M. Amjad.

kei
kei 19 May 2009 16:10:08

I do not think it is an error. Did you specify the forcing files correctly? ECPC provides files whose names are sig.ftFH (FH: forecast hours). You should probably rename these files accordingly.

changing the file names

mamjad 20 July 2009 04:53:24

Dear All,

I am using the following script to change the names of 5136 file of the GSM out (e.g. sig.ft00 to sig.ft2009040100).

#!/bin/sh

set -ax

fhour=00

##############################################################
#hour=6
while [ $fhour -le 5136 ]; do
if [ $fhour -lt 10 ]; then hour=0$fhour; fi
##############################################################

string=`/scenarios-2/AMJAD/New_Run/ecpc_exp/libs/etc/incdte 2009 04 01 00 $fhour`
year=`echo "$string" | cut -d " " -f 1`
month=`echo "$string" | cut -d " " -f 2`
date=`echo "$string" | cut -d " " -f 3`
hour=`echo "$string" | cut -d " " -f 4`

mv sig.ft$fhour sig.ft$year$month$date$fhour

hour=`expr $fhour + 6`

done

Can anybody guide in making this script.

Cheers,
M. Amjad.

kei
kei 21 July 2009 04:56:06

Dear Amjad,

4 parts should be modified, probably.

fhour=00
-->fhour=0

while [ $fhour -le 5136 ]; do
if [ $fhour -lt 10 ]; then hour=0$fhour; fi

-->if [ $fhour -lt 10 ]; then fhour=0$fhour; fi

mv sig.ft$fhour sig.ft$year$month$date$fhour
--> mv sig.ft$fhour sig.ft$year$month$date$hour

hour=`expr $fhour + 6`
--> fhour=`expr $fhour + 6`

Format conversion

mamjad 28 July 2009 06:25:33

Dear all,

I want to compare the CRU climatology data with the seasonal climate forecast. For that I need to convert .ctl files to .nc files or converse.

Is there any way to convert .ctl file to .nc file?

Regards,

M. Amjad.

lats4d with GrADS
http://gmao.gsfc.nasa.gov/software/lats4d/lats4d.html

NCO
http://nco.sourceforge.net/

CDO
http://www.mpimet.mpg.de/fileadmin/software/cdo/

All three would be useful.

I followed the steps for installation and execution of RSM (http://g-rsm.wikispaces.com/+Testing+RSM+with+rsm+script) and the models fails. The files rinpg.out, rmtn.out and sfc0.out seem correct, but the file scnvrt.out showed the following message:

What is the input surface file for RSM ?

current time stamp of integration in rsm

vmisra 28 December 2009 18:31:19

I would like to get the current time stamp of the integration in gbphys.F. When I print idate(4) in gbphys.F it gives me the initial time. However in rsminp.F when idate is printed it gives the current time stamp. How do I get this date in gbphys.F

kei
kei 28 December 2009 20:52:16

Hi,

fhour is forecast time, so that you get the current time by idate+fhour. Wouldn't it satisfy you?
