COAPS data server

You can download a number of input files for the model from COAPS data server, coaps.fsu.edu by anonymous
ftp ftp.coaps.fsu.edu
cd /pub/ECPC/kana
Please contact Haiqin Li (haiqin.li@fsu.edu) if you have any problems to access the data server.

Reanalysis data are on T62, 28 sigma levels and in ieee format.

NOTE: Older Reanalysis files can be downloaded from NCAR. You might need an account with them. http://dss.ucar.edu/pub/reanalysis/
If you download older files (before 1996 or 1997) from the NCAR server, you might need to use libs/etc/cosread to convert the files to the right format. A correct sfc file is size 1155252 and a correct sig file is size 1840400 after conversions.

For detailed information of R1 see the following web sites:
http://dss.ucar.edu/pub/reanalysis/
http://dss.ucar.edu/pub/reanalysis/aval_ftyp.html
http://dss.ucar.edu/pub/reanalysis/CRAY_bin.html
http://dss.ucar.edu/datasets/ds090.0/docs/variablelists/summary
http://dss.ucar.edu/pub/reanalysis/prod_des.html
sigma files may be referred to as sanl and surface fiels may be called sfcanl.

SST and ice files are in GRIB format.

getting input files for RSM & CRSM

huilanli 21 July 2006 15:52:04

Hi,

I am trying to test CRSM. I tried part II first, but not able to anonumously ftp to ecpc.ucsd.edu to get needed files. It seems the data server has access restrictions. For part I testing, I also have problem sftp-ing needed data using dataman with password ecpc_data. Any help?

Thanks,

Huilan

I will ask Jack for help on ecpc.ucsd.edu. He is managing the server. Sorry sftp as dataman is for tsuzumi.ucsd.edu. I fixed the error on the page.

Running GSM with persisted SST anomaly

hko 25 September 2006 07:44:46

Hi Hideki,
I am struggling to put in SST to run GSM. From the shell script provided by Jack, I would need the following files:
sfcanl126.fmt.Z
opan126slmsk.fmt
clim.sst.50-97.bin
Are these files available on your data server?
Cheers,
Sai Ming

I don't think they are on tsuzumi server. Did you ask Jack? Hideki

SST and ice

hko 22 December 2006 06:47:21

Hi Hideki,
Do you also download the daily SST grib and ice grib from NCEP's server? If yes, can you tell me the path of NCEP's server?
Thanks.
Sai Ming

Hi,
I re-posted the previous message with a more appropriate subject.
In your ftp script, I notice that you also download the snow grib from NCEP. Are the snow gribs for past years (just like the SST and ice gribs on the Tsuzumi server) available somewhere?

NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis 1 Data

hko 24 December 2006 07:35:16

Hi Hideki,
First of all, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and all those who provide great support to G-RSM users.
I found the following website regarding NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis 1 data:
http://www.cdc.noaa.gov/cdc/data.ncep.reanalysis.html
Are the data the same kind of what you are providing on the Tsuzumi server? If yes, is there any existing utility to extract and convert the netcdf files to the ieee format that can be read by GSM?

Hi,
Well, I was just thinking the netcdf files seemed to cover more than the first day of each month and that could also be a good source of initial data for GSM. Cheers.

NCEP R2 data

lct 28 May 2007 01:43:32

Dear Khideki:
I have a question about the R2 data.
Is it a ous1 option for CVS version ?
If yes, the ALBEDO variable only has one level data,
right ?
Thank you.

There are 14 variables in the NCEP2 surface file,so I think it should be a osu1 option for CVS version. And the surface ALBEDO variable only has one level.

virtual temperature?

vmisra 23 January 2008 19:15:27

I would like to know if the temperature output on pressure level and sigma level is virtual temperature or not?
Thanks,
Vasu

In original sigma files (such as r_sig.ft* or sig.ft*), virtual temperature is in. But in post-processed files (such as r_pgb.ft* or pgb.ft*), usual temperature is in.

Virtual temperature

vmisra 12 November 2008 14:58:52

In preparing the basefield for RSM, I would like to know if it requires virtual temperature or just temperature?

kei
kei 12 November 2008 16:31:49

It should contain virtual temperature. Also for global basefield files, the quantities should be written in spectral expression, whereas regional sigma files contain data in direct gridded format.

If you already have a pressure level data set, you should consider using p2sig. P2sig requires global T (=air T), U, V, specific humidity (or RH), and sfcPrs (or mslPrs) to make a global basefield. Check p2sig.html .

NCEP /NCAR coordinate reference system

wilbersa 27 May 2011 11:03:52

Hi all,
I am new here and learing to work with the NCEP/NCAR data. I noticed that the coordinate reference system for some layers here goe from 0 to 360° of longitude. How can I change this, so the resulting layer go from -180 to 180° of longitude?.
I know it is a quite basic question, but could somebody help me with this?.
cheers,
Rodrigo
